Problem

Mars has mass 6.4×1023 kg6.4\times10^{23}\,\text{kg} and radius 3.4×106 m3.4\times10^{6}\,\text{m}. (a) Calculate the escape velocity from the surface of Mars. Take G=6.67×10−11 N m2kg−2G = 6.67\times10^{-11}\,\text{N\,m}^2\text{kg}^{-2}. (b) A spacecraft of mass 2000 kg2000\,\text{kg} is launched vertically from the Martian surface with an initial speed of 5.0 km s−15.0\,\text{km\,s}^{-1}. Determine, with supporting calculation of the mechanical energy per unit mass at launch, whether the spacecraft will escape Mars’ gravitational influence.
