Problem
A 2.00 m tall cylindrical storage tank is filled with an unknown liquid mixture. Four samples are withdrawn through side ports located at depths of 0.25 m, 0.75 m, 1.25 m, and 1.75 m below the surface. The chloride-ion concentration [Cl−] in each sample is determined by titration and reported in the table below.
Depth (m) [Cl−] (mol L−1)
0.25 0.112
0.75 0.109
1.25 0.111
1.75 0.147
(a) Calculate the average chloride-ion concentration of the four samples to three significant figures.
(b) Determine the percent deviation of the deepest sample (1.75 m) from the average you calculated in part (a). Show your work.
(c) Using the results of parts (a) and (b), classify the contents of the tank as either a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture at the macroscopic scale. Justify your classification.
