Problem

At 650 K the thermal decomposition of nitrogen dioxide can proceed through a single elementary step represented below: 2 NO₂(g) → 2 NO(g) + O₂(g) The reaction is studied in a closed, rigid vessel at constant temperature. (a) Write an expression for the rate of disappearance of NO₂ in terms of the rate constant k and the concentration of NO₂. (b) Derive the differential expression for d[NO]/dt in terms of k and [NO₂]. (c) State the overall reaction order implied by your rate law in part (a). (d) Determine the units of k when concentration is expressed in mol L⁻¹ and time in seconds.
