Problem
A ball is projected vertically upward with an initial velocity u. Upward is taken as positive for the entire motion.
Respond to the following points.
(i) Write the expression for the velocity v of the ball after a time t and explain the physical meaning of every sign that appears in your expression.
(ii) Explain, without performing any numerical calculation, how the signs of velocity and acceleration differ during the upward and downward journeys of the ball. Include the instant when the ball is momentarily at rest at its highest point in your discussion.
(iii) Sketch a velocity–time graph for the complete motion, clearly indicating the sign of velocity, the constant slope, and the point corresponding to the highest position.
