Problem

A circuit contains a 12 V12\,\text{V} battery whose positive terminal is node A and negative terminal is node D. From node A the conductor leads to node B, where it splits into two parallel branches: • Branch 1: an ideal ammeter followed by resistor R1 = 10 Ω10\,\Omega leading to node C. • Branch 2: resistor R2 = 20 Ω20\,\Omega leading to node E. Nodes C and E are re-joined at node D, which returns to the negative terminal of the battery, forming a rectangular loop ABCD. An ideal voltmeter is connected across the terminals of R2 (between nodes B and E). All connecting wires have negligible resistance. Assume steady–state direct current conditions. (a) Draw a clearly labeled schematic of the circuit exactly as described, showing all components and nodes. (b) Identify every distinct closed loop that exists while both meters are connected. Name each loop using the sequence of nodes it follows. (c) For each component (battery, R1, R2, ammeter, voltmeter, and each labeled wire segment) list all loops of which it is a member, and justify each placement with reference to the physical path available for charge flow. (d) Does connecting the voltmeter alter the total number of closed loops in this circuit? Explain fully, citing an ideal voltmeter’s electrical properties.
