Problem
A 2.0 kg steel block is being hauled along a warehouse floor by a rope that makes an angle 45° above the horizontal. The pulling force is maintained at a constant 25 N. The coefficient of kinetic friction between steel and the floor is 0.30. After the block has slid 2.0 m, another 1.0 kg steel plate is gently placed on top of the block without imparting any impulse. The same 25 N force continues to act at the same angle.
(i) Calculate the acceleration of the block–plate system before the plate is added.
(ii) Determine the time taken to cover the first 2.0 m starting from rest.
(iii) Find the acceleration immediately after the plate is added and compute the additional distance moved in the next 3.0 s.
