Problem

Answer the questions that follow regarding the construction, working and maintenance of a simple direct-current motor. (i) Draw a neat, labelled diagram of a simple d.c. motor showing the coil, magnetic field, split-ring commutator and brushes. (ii) Describe step by step how the forces acting on the two arms of the coil produce a continuous rotational motion. (iii) Distinguish between a split-ring commutator and slip rings. Write any three differences. (iv) List any two common faults that can stop the motor from rotating and describe one practical method to test or rectify each fault in a school laboratory setting.
