Problem

The family of autonomous differential equations dydx=y2−n y\frac{dy}{dx} = y^2 - n\,y, where nn is a real parameter, produces different slope fields as nn varies. (a) Show that the number of equilibrium solutions depends on the sign of nn. List the equilibrium values of yy for n<0n < 0, n=0n = 0, and n>0n > 0. (b) For n=2n = 2, sketch the slope field in the rectangle −2≤x≤2-2 \le x \le 2, −1≤y≤3-1 \le y \le 3, paying particular attention to the slopes along the lines y=0y = 0 and y=2y = 2. (c) For n=−1n = -1, repeat the sketching task described in part (b) on a separate diagram. (d) Compare the long-term behaviour of a solution with initial condition y(0)=1y(0) = 1 for n=2n = 2 and for n=−1n = -1. Use both your slope fields and analytical reasoning based on the differential equation dydx=y2−n y\frac{dy}{dx} = y^2 - n\,y to justify your conclusions.
