Problem

For each positive constant kk, define the curve CkC_k by x(t)=t,  y(t)=ketx(t)=t,\; y(t)=k e^{t} on 0≤t≤10\le t\le 1. Investigate how the total length of CkC_k depends on the parameter kk. (a) Write the speed vk(t)v_k(t) of CkC_k as a function of tt and kk. Simplify. (b) Show that for every fixed tt in [0,1][0,1], the speed vk(t)v_k(t) is an increasing function of kk. Provide derivative-based or algebraic justification. (c) Explain why the total length S(k)S(k) of CkC_k on [0,1][0,1] must also be an increasing function of kk. Give a rigorous argument that does not evaluate any definite integrals. (d) Determine whether the ratio S(k)k\dfrac{S(k)}{k} is increasing, decreasing, or neither as kk increases. Support your conclusion with appropriate reasoning rooted in your earlier work.
