Problem

Two samples, each containing 1.0 mol of gas, are confined separately in rigid 2.00 L containers at 300 K. Sample A is carbon dioxide, CO2_2, while Sample B is neon, Ne. After the vessels are pressurized to 50.0 atm (as predicted by the ideal-gas equation), the measured pressures are found to differ from the ideal value. Answer the following about the expected deviations from ideal behavior for Samples A and B. (a) Identify which sample, A or B, is expected to exhibit the larger negative deviation (measured pressure lower than 50.0 atm). (b) Explain, at the molecular level, why the chosen sample deviates more strongly from the ideal-gas prediction under these conditions. In your explanation, discuss both intermolecular attractions and molecular size.
