Problem

A student asserts: “The battery raises the potential of charges by its EMF, and the same EMF appears across the external circuit once current starts flowing.” (i) State whether the assertion is correct or incorrect and give a reason for your answer. (ii) Using an energy-per-coulomb argument, differentiate clearly between the roles played by EMF and terminal potential difference in a working electric circuit. (iii) Describe what happens to the energy supplied per coulomb by the battery when the current passes through the internal resistance of the source.
