Problem

A 220 V220\,\text{V} (rms), 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz} a.c. source is connected across a resistor of 30 Ω30\,\Omega, an inductor of 100 mH100\,\text{mH} and a capacitor of 50 μF50\,\mu\text{F} in series. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the impedance of the circuit at 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz}. (b) Determine the phase angle between the source voltage and the circuit current at this frequency, stating clearly whether the current leads or lags. (c) The supply frequency is now doubled to 100 Hz100\,\text{Hz} while all component values remain unchanged. Find the new impedance and phase angle. (d) Comment on how the power factor of the circuit changes when the frequency is doubled.
