Problem

Two identical 4.0 kg4.0\,\text{kg} blocks (Block A and Block B) are separately placed on the same horizontal surface. For Block A the coefficient of static friction is μs,A=0.20\mu_{s,A}=0.20, whereas for Block B it is μs,B=0.50\mu_{s,B}=0.50. Both blocks share the same coefficient of kinetic friction μk=0.15\mu_k = 0.15. A horizontal force FappF_{\text{app}} is applied to each block and increased uniformly from 0 N0\,\text{N} up to 22 N22\,\text{N}. (a) On a single set of axes, sketch qualitative graphs of the friction-force magnitude versus applied force for both Block A and Block B. Clearly distinguish the two curves and label all important numerical values. (b) Compare the two graphs from part (a). Explain the physical reason for any differences in the position and shape of the curves. (c) When the applied force reaches 10 N10\,\text{N}, determine which block, if any, is moving. Support your answer with calculations. (d) Once the applied force reaches 22 N22\,\text{N}, both blocks are sliding. Calculate the magnitude of each block’s acceleration and comment on any similarities or differences.
