Problem

Two point masses mm and 9m9m are separated by a distance dd and attract each other with a force FF. (i) Write the expression for FF in terms of mm, dd and the universal constant. (ii) The larger mass is replaced by 4m4m and the separation is reduced to d2\tfrac{d}{2}. Calculate the new gravitational force F′F' in terms of FF. (iii) Evaluate F′F' when F=2.0×10−5 NF = 2.0\times10^{-5}\,\text{N}, m=0.50 kgm = 0.50\,\text{kg} and d=0.40 md = 0.40\,\text{m}.
