Problem

Two half-cell reduction reactions are listed below, each under standard conditions. Cu²⁺(aq) + 2 e⁻ → Cu(s)  E° = +0.34 V Zn²⁺(aq) + 2 e⁻ → Zn(s)  E° = –0.76 V If electrodes made of solid copper and solid zinc are connected through an external circuit and placed in solutions of their respective ions, identify which species will be oxidized and which will be reduced. State whether the overall reaction is thermodynamically favored under standard conditions and support your answer with the value of E°cell.
