Problem

A student is asked to prepare a neat schematic diagram of the wiring required to supply one lamp, one ceiling fan and one three-pin power socket in a room from a single-phase 220 V mains. The circuit must include a main switch, a fuse and proper earthing. (i) Draw the required schematic diagram showing live, neutral and earth conductors as well as the position of the fuse and individual switches. (ii) Explain why each appliance is connected in parallel rather than in series. (iii) If the insulation of the fan motor fails and the metal body becomes live, describe how earthing protects the user from electric shock. (iv) State two differences between a fuse and a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) used for the same purpose.
