Problem

A resistor R=40 ΩR = 40\,\Omega, an inductor L=50 mHL = 50\,\text{mH} and a capacitor C=80 μFC = 80\,\mu\text{F} are connected in series to a single–phase ac supply of constant rms voltage 220 V220\,\text{V}. (i) Calculate the frequency at which the circuit current is maximised. (ii) Find the average power delivered to the circuit at that frequency. (iii) Determine the average power when the supply frequency is exactly one–half of the value obtained in part (i). (iv) Comment briefly on the difference between the two power values obtained.
