Problem
Consider the gas-phase equilibrium CO(g)+Cl2(g)⇌COCl2(g) at a fixed temperature. A mixture is initially at equilibrium. Some COCl2(g) is quickly removed from the container while the total volume and temperature stay constant. Predict the sign of ΔG immediately after the removal and state whether the net reaction will proceed forward or reverse as the system re-establishes equilibrium.
