Problem

(a) State the rule used to find the sense of magnetic field lines produced by a straight current-carrying conductor. (b) A long, straight copper wire is fixed so that it passes vertically through a bench top. Draw a neat, labelled sketch showing the magnetic field pattern as seen from above when the conventional current in the wire is vertically upward. (c) Redraw the sketch for the case when the current in the same wire is vertically downward. (d) A small compass is placed 3 cm due east of the wire. Describe and justify the initial deflection of the compass needle for the two current directions mentioned in parts (b) and (c).
