Problem

An object moves along a straight line such that its distance–time graph passes through the successive points: (0 s,0 m)→(2 s,6 m)→(5 s,6 m)→(9 s,18 m)→(12 s,18 m)(0\,\text{s},0\,\text{m}) \rightarrow (2\,\text{s},6\,\text{m}) \rightarrow (5\,\text{s},6\,\text{m}) \rightarrow (9\,\text{s},18\,\text{m}) \rightarrow (12\,\text{s},18\,\text{m}) with straight-line segments between each pair of points. Using only this information, answer the following questions. (i) Determine the speed in each of the four consecutive segments of motion. (ii) Calculate the total distance travelled in the entire 12 s12\,\text{s} interval. (iii) Find the average speed for the complete journey. (iv) What percentage of the total time does the object remain at rest? Show your calculation. (v) If the object were to continue for another 4 s4\,\text{s} with the same speed as in the third segment, what would be its distance from the start at t=16 st=16\,\text{s}?
