A string of 20 identical miniature bulbs is designed to be connected in series directly to a 120V mains supply. Each bulb is rated 6.0V,0.30A.
(i) Calculate the resistance of one bulb and hence the total resistance of the complete string.
(ii) Determine the current drawn by the string when all bulbs are glowing normally.
(iii) Find the total power consumed by the lighting string.
(iv) One bulb goes out, causing the circuit to open. Explain what happens to the remaining bulbs and why.
(v) To restore the circuit temporarily, an electrician replaces the failed bulb by a resistor that allows the remaining bulbs to glow at their rated voltage. Calculate the resistance value that should be used in place of the failed bulb.
