Problem

Consider a source of emf E\mathcal{E} having internal resistance rr that supplies current to an external load resistor RR. The current in the circuit is I=ER+rI=\dfrac{\mathcal{E}}{R+r}. Answer the following. (i) Derive an expression for the power delivered to the load PRP_R in terms of E,r\mathcal{E}, r and RR. (ii) Show that the efficiency η\eta of power transfer, defined as η=PREI\eta = \dfrac{P_R}{\mathcal{E} I}, can be written as η=RR+r\eta = \dfrac{R}{R+r}. (iii) Explain qualitatively, without further calculation, how the efficiency changes when (a) R≫rR \gg r and (b) R≪rR \ll r. (iv) A student claims that choosing RR equal to zero would yield 100%100\% efficiency. Identify and explain the flaw in this reasoning.
