Problem
A wooden block of mass 10kg is sliding down a smooth plane that makes an angle of 30∘ with the horizontal. At a certain instant the block is moving down the slope with a speed of 6.0ms−1. After reaching the bottom of the incline, it continues to move along the horizontal ground with a speed of 8.0ms−1. Answer the following:
(i) Calculate the magnitude of the block’s momentum while it is on the slope.
(ii) Resolve this momentum into horizontal and vertical components.
(iii) Determine the horizontal and vertical components of the block’s momentum after it has reached the horizontal ground.
(iv) Hence find the magnitude of the change in momentum of the block between the two positions specified.
