Problem
A spherical scientific probe of total mass m drifts through deep space with no significant external forces acting on it. At a certain instant, a timer triggers an internal device that separates the probe into two portions, a front section of mass m1 and a rear section of mass m2. Immediately before separation the probe is moving in the +x–direction with a constant speed v0 relative to an inertial reference frame.
Answer the following qualitatively; no numerical calculations are required.
(a) At the instant just after separation, describe the location of the system’s center of mass relative to the two portions.
(b) Explain whether the speed of the system’s center of mass changes as a result of the internal separation event.
(c) Describe the subsequent motion of each portion and of the system’s center of mass over time, making explicit reference to directions of travel and relative speeds.
(d) Sketch on a single set of axes qualitative x–position versus time curves for the front portion, the rear portion, and the system’s center of mass, labelling each clearly.
