Problem

Equal volumes of three aqueous solutions, each at 25 ∘C25\,^{\circ}\text{C}, are available: • 0.10 mol L−10.10\,\text{mol\,L}^{-1} NaCl • 0.10 mol L−10.10\,\text{mol\,L}^{-1} CaCl2_2 • 0.10 mol L−10.10\,\text{mol\,L}^{-1} glucose, C6_6H12_{12}O6_6 Assume complete dissociation for any ionic solute and negligible ionization for molecular solutes. (a) Calculate the total molar concentration of dissolved particles produced by each solution. (b) Using your calculations, predict the relative electrical conductivity of the three solutions (highest to lowest). Explain how the number of mobile charge carriers influences conductivity. (c) Suppose the concentration of glucose were doubled while the concentrations of NaCl and CaCl2_2 remained the same. Would this change the predicted conductivity ranking? Explain.
