Problem

A laboratory technician measures the length of a straight nichrome wire as 1.20 m1.20\,\text{m} and its diameter as 0.80 mm0.80\,\text{mm}. When a potential difference of 3.0 V3.0\,\text{V} is applied across its ends, a current of 2.5 A2.5\,\text{A} is recorded. (a) Calculate the cross-sectional area of the wire. (b) Determine the resistance of the wire from the experimental data. (c) Using your answers to parts (a) and (b), compute the resistivity of nichrome at room temperature. (d) The accepted range of resistivity for nichrome at room temperature is (1.0–1.5)×10−6 Ω m(1.0\text{–}1.5)\times10^{-6}\,\Omega\,\text{m}. State whether the measured value lies within this range and give one possible reason if it does not.
