Problem

A light metre scale is pivoted at the 50 cm50\,\text{cm} mark and lies horizontally. Three horizontal forces act perpendicular to the scale: • F1=4 NF_1=4\,\text{N} applied upward at the 10 cm10\,\text{cm} mark, • F2=6 NF_2=6\,\text{N} applied downward at the 80 cm80\,\text{cm} mark, • F3=3 NF_3=3\,\text{N} applied upward at the 100 cm100\,\text{cm} mark. Take counter-clockwise rotation about the pivot as positive. (i) Calculate the magnitude and sign of the torque produced by each force about the pivot. (ii) Determine the algebraic sum of the torques and state whether the scale tends to rotate clockwise, counter-clockwise, or remains in rotational equilibrium.
