Problem

Square aluminium plates of side 10 cm10\,\text{cm} are placed parallel to each other at a separation of 2.0 mm2.0\,\text{mm} in air to form a capacitor. Take ε0=8.85×10−12 C2 N−1 m−2\varepsilon_0 = 8.85 \times 10^{-12}\,\text{C}^2\,\text{N}^{-1}\,\text{m}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the capacitance of the arrangement in pico-farads. (ii) The plates are slowly pulled apart until the new separation becomes 5.0 mm5.0\,\text{mm}. Determine the percentage decrease in the capacitance compared with the value obtained in part (i).
