Problem

An object of mass mm moves along a straight line under the action of several external forces. Answer the following questions about the motion and its kinetic energy. (i) State the work–energy theorem for a particle of constant mass. (ii) Explain, with reason, what happens to the speed of the particle if the net work done on it between two positions is (a) positive, (b) zero, and (c) negative. (iii) A student claims that whenever the net work done on a moving particle is negative, the particle must finally come to rest. Comment briefly on the correctness of this statement.
