Problem

A pump transfers water from an underground reservoir to an overhead tank in two distinct stages. Stage 1: It lifts 6000 kg6000\,\text{kg} of water vertically through 30 m30\,\text{m} in 10 min10\,\text{min}. Stage 2: Without interruption it raises the same water a further 15 m15\,\text{m} to the roof tank in 5 min5\,\text{min}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the mechanical work done in each stage and hence find the total work done. (ii) Determine the overall time taken for the operation. (iii) Compute the average power developed by the pump for the entire process in watts and in kilowatts. (iv) Convert the total mechanical work obtained in part (i) into kilowatt–hours (1 kWh=3.6×106 J)(1\,\text{kWh}=3.6\times10^{6}\,\text{J}).
