Problem
A wooden block of mass 20kg rests on a horizontal table. It is tied to a rope that passes over a smooth, light pulley fixed at the edge of the table. A stone of mass 5kg hangs freely at the other end of the rope. The system remains at rest because the friction between the block and the table is sufficiently large.
(i) Identify and list every distinct action–reaction force pair acting in the system. For each pair, state the two bodies involved and the direction of each force.
(ii) How many unique action–reaction pairs did you list in part (i)? State the number clearly.
(iii) The table presses upward on the block with a normal reaction of 200N. State the magnitude and direction of the corresponding force exerted by the block on the table.
