Problem

Masses 2 kg2\,\text{kg} and 6 kg6\,\text{kg} are placed 1.2 m1.2\,\text{m} apart on a horizontal line. A 0.5 kg0.5\,\text{kg} mass is kept on the line joining them at a point 0.30 m0.30\,\text{m} from the 2 kg2\,\text{kg} mass. Determine the magnitude of the net gravitational force on the 0.5 kg0.5\,\text{kg} mass and state whether it acts towards the 2 kg2\,\text{kg} mass or the 6 kg6\,\text{kg} mass. (Use G=6.67×10−11 N m2/kg2G = 6.67\times10^{-11}\,\text{N\,m}^2\text{/kg}^2.)
