Problem

Three small objects are constrained to move only along the x-axis. Their positions and masses are listed below: • Object A: mass 0.40 kg, position x = −0.20 m • Object B: mass 1.0 kg, position x = +0.30 m • Object C: mass 0.60 kg, position x = +1.20 m (1) Calculate the x-coordinate of the center of mass of the three-object system. Show your work and include appropriate units. (2) Is the center of mass located between any two of the three objects? State which ones, or explain if it is outside their range. (3) Suppose Object A is moved to x = −0.40 m while its mass remains the same. Without carrying out a full recalculation, indicate whether the center of mass will shift to the left, to the right, or remain unchanged. Briefly explain your reasoning.
