Problem

Block A of mass 2 kg2\,\text{kg} is held pressed against a smooth vertical wall by a horizontal block B of mass 3 kg3\,\text{kg}. Block B is pushed towards the wall by a horizontal force PP, as shown schematically. The coefficients of static friction are: between A and B, 0.40; between A and the wall, 0.25; between B and the horizontal floor, 0.30. The acceleration due to gravity g=10 m s−2g = 10\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the minimum value of PP required so that block A does not slide down the wall. (ii) For the value of PP obtained in part (i), determine the horizontal acceleration of block B. (iii) Find the magnitude and direction of the frictional forces acting (a) between A and B, (b) between A and the wall, and (c) between B and the floor.
