Problem

Let a⃗\vec a be a fixed non-zero vector and let k>0k>0 be a fixed real number. Consider all vectors b⃗\vec b having magnitude kk. For such vectors define P=a⃗⋅b⃗k,P=\dfrac{\vec a \cdot \vec b}{k}, which equals the length of the projection of a⃗\vec a on b⃗\vec b. (i) Show that PP attains a maximum when b⃗\vec b is parallel to a⃗\vec a and a minimum when b⃗\vec b is antiparallel to a⃗\vec a. (ii) Obtain the maximum and minimum possible numerical values of PP in terms of ∣a⃗∣|\vec a| and kk. (iii) Take a⃗=4i+j−2k\vec a = 4\mathbf{i} + \mathbf{j} - 2\mathbf{k} and k=7k = 7. Find vectors b⃗max\vec b_{\text{max}} and b⃗min\vec b_{\text{min}} (in component form) that realise the extreme values obtained in part (ii).
