Problem

A 1.0 kW electric iron is rated for 230 V AC mains. Its metallic casing is connected to earth through a wire of resistance 1.0 Ω. During a fault, the live conductor comes in contact with the casing. (a) Calculate the current that will flow through the earth wire immediately after the fault occurs. (b) If a 5 A fuse is provided in the live lead of the iron, state with calculation whether the fuse will melt in this situation. (c) After the fuse operates, what will be the potential of the casing with respect to earth? Justify your answer.
