Problem

(a) Define the following terms as used in experimental physics: (i) absolute uncertainty, (ii) fractional (relative) uncertainty, (iii) percentage uncertainty. (b) A student measures the length of a metal rod as 25.0 cm25.0\,\text{cm} with an estimated uncertainty of ±0.1 cm\pm0.1\,\text{cm}. Convert this uncertainty into fractional and percentage form. (c) Another student determines the mass of a brass block as 75.0 g75.0\,\text{g} with an uncertainty of ±0.5 g\pm0.5\,\text{g}. Without performing detailed calculations, state which of the two measurements—length of the rod or mass of the block—is more precise and justify your answer on the basis of percentage uncertainty.
