Problem

A ball is projected vertically upward from the ground. During its downward journey it crosses the top edge of a high window and then the bottom edge of the same window, which is 25 m25\,\text{m} below the top edge, 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s} later. (i) Let the velocity of the ball as it passes the top edge be v1v_1 (downward positive). Write the displacement of the ball during the 0.50 s0.50\,\text{s} interval in terms of v1v_1, tt and gg. (ii) Using the result of part (i), derive a quadratic equation in v1v_1 and hence determine its numerical value (take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}). (iii) Find the speed with which the ball was originally projected from the ground.
