Problem
A fire-hose of circular cross-section (internal diameter 6.0 cm) is connected to a smooth nozzle whose exit diameter is 2.0 cm. The hose and nozzle lie in a horizontal plane. At a point in the hose 2.0 m upstream of the nozzle entrance, the gauge pressure of the water is 4.0 × 10^5 Pa. Take the water density as 1.0 × 10^3 kg/m^3 and neglect viscous effects.
(a) Determine the speed of the water in the hose 2.0 m upstream of the nozzle entrance.
(b) Determine the speed of the water as it emerges from the nozzle.
(c) Calculate the gauge pressure of the water just inside the nozzle exit (immediately before it leaves the hose).
