Problem

Two resistors, R1R_1 and R2R_2, are connected to an ideal battery. Initially, a switch in the branch containing R2R_2 is open, so only R1R_1 is in the circuit. An ideal ammeter is placed in series with R1R_1, and an ideal voltmeter is connected across the entire resistor network. With the switch open, the ammeter reads I0I_0 and the voltmeter reads V0V_0. The switch is then closed, adding R2R_2 in parallel with R1R_1. Which of the following best describes the subsequent meter readings? (a) The ammeter reading remains I0I_0, and the voltmeter reading remains V0V_0. (b) The ammeter reading increases above I0I_0, and the voltmeter reading remains V0V_0. (c) The ammeter reading increases above I0I_0, and the voltmeter reading decreases below V0V_0. (d) The ammeter reading decreases below I0I_0, and the voltmeter reading remains V0V_0.
