Problem

In a hydraulic press, a worker applies a force of 300 N300\,\text{N} on a small piston of area 5.0 cm25.0\,\text{cm}^2 and moves it down by 20 cm20\,\text{cm}. The large piston has an area of 400 cm2400\,\text{cm}^2 and lifts a metal block. Because of friction, only 92%92\% of the work done on the small piston appears as useful work in raising the block. (a) Calculate the total work done on the small piston. (b) Determine the rise of the large piston. (c) Find the weight of the metal block that can be lifted under these conditions.
