Problem

A series LCR circuit is driven by an AC source of fixed amplitude. Let ω\omega be the angular frequency of the source and ω0\omega_0 the resonant angular frequency of the circuit. (a) Show that for ω>ω0\omega > \omega_0 the circuit behaves predominantly inductively, whereas for ω<ω0\omega < \omega_0 it behaves predominantly capacitively. (b) Derive an expression for the difference ∣XL−XC∣|X_L - X_C| in terms of ω\omega, ω0\omega_0, LL and CC. (c) Using your expression, discuss how the current amplitude varies as the frequency is tuned slightly above and slightly below resonance, commenting on the role played by the resistance RR.
