Problem

A light ring of negligible mass is held at the junction of three inextensible strings lying in the same plane. Two of the strings are kept taut with tensions 40 N40\,\text{N} and 25 N25\,\text{N}, the angle between their directions being 120∘120^{\circ}. The ring remains at rest. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the tension in the third string and state its direction with respect to the 40 N40\,\text{N} string. (b) If the string carrying the 25 N25\,\text{N} tension is suddenly cut, the ring (mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg}) moves under the action of the remaining two strings. Determine the magnitude and direction of its instantaneous acceleration just after the cut.
