Problem
A solid block of mass m is released from rest on a rough fixed plane that is inclined at an angle θ to the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is μk. Assume that the block slides without rolling.
(a) Draw a clearly labelled free-body diagram showing all forces acting on the block when it is on the plane.
(b) Starting from the forces identified, derive an expression for the acceleration of the block down the plane in terms of g,θ and μk.
(c) Using θ=30∘ and μk=0.15, calculate the numerical value of the acceleration.
