Problem

A long straight conductor carries a steady current I. A student investigates the magnetic field produced around the conductor. (i) State the rule that gives the direction of the magnetic field produced by the current in the conductor. (ii) Draw a neat sketch of the magnetic field lines around the conductor when the current flows vertically upward. Mark the direction of the field lines. (iii) Explain qualitatively how the strength of the magnetic field varies with (a) the perpendicular distance r from the conductor, and (b) the magnitude of the current I flowing through it.
