Problem

A 2.5 kg2.5\,\text{kg} block rests on a horizontal surface. It is connected by a light cord passing over a frictionless pulley to a 1.8 kg1.8\,\text{kg} block that hangs vertically off the edge of the table. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the 2.5 kg2.5\,\text{kg} block and the table is μk=0.28\mu_k = 0.28, and the coefficient of static friction is μs=0.35\mu_s = 0.35. Assume the cord and pulley have negligible mass. (a) Determine whether the system will start moving when released from rest. Support your conclusion with quantitative reasoning. (b) If motion occurs, calculate the magnitude of the acceleration of each block. (c) For the situation in part (b), compute the tension in the cord. (d) After moving 0.60 m0.60\,\text{m} from rest, find the speed of the hanging block. If the system does not move, state the speed and justify your answer briefly.
