Problem

A block of ice of mass 900 g900\,\text{g} contains a small piece of lead of mass 100 g100\,\text{g} embedded completely inside it. The density of ice is 0.92 g cm−30.92\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3} and the density of lead is 11.3 g cm−311.3\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. (i) Calculate the volume of the ice portion. (ii) Calculate the volume of the lead piece. (iii) Find the total volume of the ice–lead combination. (iv) Determine the average density of the combination. (v) Will this combination float or sink in water? If it floats, compute the percentage of its volume that remains above the water surface.
