A passenger train is approaching a station platform along a straight track at 108km h−1. The engine driver has to bring the train to rest exactly at a point 450m from the place where the brakes are to be applied. The brakes provide a uniform retardation, whose magnitude remains constant once applied.
(i) Calculate the magnitude of the retardation required so that the train stops at the desired point.
(ii) Suppose the driver delays the application of the brakes by 5.0s while maintaining the initial speed during this interval. Keeping the same magnitude of retardation as in part (i), determine how far beyond the intended stopping point the train will come to rest.
