Problem

Two particulate diagrams are provided. • Diagram I depicts solid NaCl\text{NaCl} in water showing separate Na+\text{Na}^+ and Cl−\text{Cl}^- ions dispersed among H2O\text{H}_2\text{O} molecules. • Diagram II depicts molten NaCl\text{NaCl} in which Na+\text{Na}^+ and Cl−\text{Cl}^- ions remain in close contact within a fluid, ion-rich phase but no water molecules are present. For each diagram, classify the process (dissolving or melting) as a physical change, a chemical change, or both, and justify your classification based on the bonding interactions shown.
