Problem

Answer the following questions concerning the relationship between linear momentum pp and kinetic energy KK. (i) Starting from the definitions of pp and KK, derive an expression for pp in terms of KK and the mass mm of a particle. (ii) Two particles PP and QQ have equal kinetic energies but their masses are in the ratio mP:mQ=1:4m_P:m_Q = 1:4. Using the expression obtained in part (i), find the ratio of their momenta pP:pQp_P:p_Q. (iii) Conversely, two other particles RR and SS have equal momenta, while their masses are again in the ratio 1:41:4. Find the ratio of their kinetic energies KR:KSK_R:K_S. (iv) Comment on the results obtained in parts (ii) and (iii) to explain how two bodies can have equal kinetic energies but unequal momenta, and vice-versa.
